At the beginning of 2022, Fraunhofer IFAM will put into operation a fully networked, automated surface technology center for large components, which will be dedicated to the special challenges of coatings in the aerospace industry.
In future, the expertise from the areas of coatings and surface technology as well as quality assurance and cyber-physical systems will be bundled at the new demonstration center. For this purpose, two automated robot cells suitable for Industry 4.0 will be available for the pre-treatment, coating and quality assurance of large components. The aim is to evaluate process and measurement data inline, make it accessible via cloud computing and visualise it via augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). By using machine learning and process automation, the experts at Fraunhofer IFAM will develop innovative surface treatment processes in the future. Completion of the demonstration center is planned for early 2022.
Among other things, the new demonstration center plays an important role in the project “Bellissima“ funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy BMWi (20Q1912F). The focus of the project is on saving process times and material costs through on-demand digitized laser paint stripping, pre-treatment and edge-sharp painting in the aviation industry. The demonstration of the developed processes will take place in the new demonstration center at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen.
