Miba’s sputtering technology was recently awarded the jury prize for radical innovation at the State Prize for Innovation in recognition of particularly outstanding achievements. The developed coating process leads to 15% less fuel consumption, 20% less noise and 15% less CO2 emissions in aircraft turbines. Thereby Miba`s sputter technology makes aircraft more efficient, environmentally friendly and quieter. The development work took more than 20 years, but it is now installed in more than half of all new medium-sized aircraft worldwide. The gears in the gearboxes of aircraft turbines are coated using the special sputtering process, which then require less installation space and have a higher efficiency. The development work continues: as next step, the Laakirchen-based company is working on a lead-free sputter coating. The aim is to achieve even greater environmental friendliness.
